Liverpool have received a significant injury boost ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash against La Liga side Girona at Estadi Montilivi on Tuesday, with Diogo Jota making his return to first-team training.
The 28-year-old forward has been sidelined since picking up a rib injury during the 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield in October. Jota had to be replaced just 30 minutes into that match, and his absence has stretched across the last ten games in all competitions.
However, despite Jota’s injury setback, Liverpool’s title challenge has not been hindered. Jurgen Klopp’s side has gone unbeaten in the ten games since, maintaining their position at the top of the Premier League and performing impressively in Europe.
Jota’s return comes at an ideal time, as Liverpool has looked unstoppable in attack this season, spearheaded by the ever-reliable Mohamed Salah. With Jota back in the fold, Klopp will now have even more attacking options to rotate and strengthen his squad for the busy schedule ahead.
So far this season, Jota has been a key contributor to Liverpool’s attack, registering four goals and two assists in ten appearances across all competitions. His return will be a welcome addition, although it remains uncertain whether he will be fit enough to start against Girona on Tuesday. However, the Portuguese international could still feature as a substitute, offering a potential spark off the bench.
In addition to Jota’s return, Liverpool have also been boosted by the availability of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson. The Brazilian shot-stopper has been absent for the last 11 matches due to a hamstring injury, initially expected to keep him sidelined for six weeks. His recovery took slightly longer, but he is now expected to be named in the squad for the Champions League tie against Girona.
While Alisson’s return will certainly strengthen Liverpool’s defense, it would be a surprise if Caoimhin Kelleher, who has stepped up in his absence, does not retain his spot in the starting lineup. The Irish goalkeeper has performed admirably in Alisson’s stead, though the Brazilian’s return is imminent, and Kelleher will likely face more competition for his place.
Liverpool will be aiming to maintain their perfect start in the Champions League this season as they take on Girona, who have struggled in Europe so far, losing four of their five group-stage fixtures (W1). With a full-strength squad, Liverpool will be confident of extending their winning run and continuing their pursuit of glory on the continental stage.
